Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which high blood glucose levels are found over a long period of time.
.
Its symptoms include a frequent need to urinate and increased thirst and hunger.
.
What types of diabetes are there?
👉🏻 Type 1 Diabetes – that results from the production of insufficient insulin by the pancreas. This type was previously called "insulin-dependent diabetes". The causes are unknown.
👉🏻 Type 2 diabetes – originated from insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's cells do not respond to insulin properly. As the disease progresses, insufficient insulin production may also develop. This type was previously called "non-insulin-dependent diabetes". The main cause is overweight and lack of exercise.
👉🏻 Gestational diabetes – Gestational diabetes is the condition in which a woman without diabetes has high blood glucose levels during pregnancy.
👉🏻 Other types of Diabetes – There are some types of Diabetes that do not fall into any of the above categories, and that are uncommon. They are caused by changes known as defects in beta cells, changes in the action of insulin, diseases of the pancreas, various endocrinopathies, among others.
.
Both the prevention and treatment consist of maintaining a healthy diet, practice physical exercise regularly, maintaining a normal weight and not smoke.
