MCI describes cognitive deficits in people who do not fulfill criteria for dementia, mostly because they have no substantial impairments in everyday activities.
.
Individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) have more memory
problems than usual for people their age, but their symptoms are
not as severe as those of people with Alzheimer's dementia (AD).
.
Studies suggest that 15-20% of those aged 65+ may have aMCI.
.
Signs of aMCI include:
-memory problems
-losing things often
-forgetting events or appointments
-having more trouble coming up with words than other people of the same age.
.
People living with MCI are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias than people without MCI.
.
The risk factors most strongly linked to MCI are the same as those for dementia: advancing age, family history of Alzheimer's or another dementia, and conditions that raise risk for cardiovascular disease.
