Diabetic neuropathy is a condition that affects as many as 50% of individuals with diabetes. Common types of diabetic neuropathy include peripheral neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, proximal neuropathy, and focal neuropathy.

There are some risk factors that are associated with the development and progression of distal symmetrical polyneuropathy, like advanced age, male gender, people who origin from non-Hispanic black racial groups. Also, longer duration of diabetes Mellitus, high glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (above 7%), insulin therapy and history of systemic hypertension, and albuminuria.
